Cystic Fibrosis is one of the most common inherited disorders. It affects mainly the lungs and digestive system, but may affect several other organs. Repeated infections and airway blockages cause irreversible lung damage and the most common cause of death is lung failure. Treatment is highly specialised, and due to limited state assistance, the SA Cystic Fibrosis Association (SACFA) supports the cystic fibrosis clinics in South Africa. Public awareness of the disorder is poor in South Africa and as a result it is believed to be under-diagnosed across all race groups. SACFA aims to promote awareness/diagnosis, give affected families psychological support and ensure that all patients receive proper treatment.
