About the product 228 x 152 mm; laminated pictorial wrappers; pp. xvii + (i) + 179, incl. index. Fine condition."The representation of pain and suffering in narrative form is an ongoing ethical issue in contemporary South African literature. Can violence be represented without sensationalistic effects, or, alternatively, without effects that tend to be conservative because they place the reader in a position of superiority over the victim or the perpetrator? Jolly looks at three primary South African authors - André Brink, Breyten Breytenbach, and J. M. Coetzee - to consider violence in the context of apartheid and colonialism and their inherent patriarchies. Jolly also discusses the violence attendant upon the act of narration in the broader context of critiques of Kafka, Freud, Hegel, the postcolonial critics Jan Mohamed and Bhabha, and feminists such as Susan Suleiman." Colonization, Violence, and Narration in White South African Writing: André Brink, Breyten Breytenbach, and J. M. Coetzee (Rosemary Jane Jolly)

This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days The Civil War brought many forms of upheaval to America, not only in waking hours but also in the dark of night. Sleeplessness plagued the Union and Confederate armies, and dreams of war glided through the minds of Americans in both the North and South. Sometimes their nightly visions brought the horrors of the conflict vividly to life. But for others, nighttime was an escape from the hard realities of life and death in wartime. In this innovative new study, Jonathan W. White explores what dreams meant to Civil War-era Americans and what their dreams reveal about their experiences during the war. He shows how Americans grappled with their fears, desires, and struggles while they slept, and how their dreams helped them make sense of the confusion, despair, and loneliness that engulfed them. White takes readers into the deepest, darkest, and most intimate places of the Civil War, connecting the emotional experiences of soldiers and civilians to the broader history of the conflict, confirming what poets have known for centuries: that there are some truths that are only revealed in the world of darkness. Features Summary In this innovative study, Jonathan White explores what dreams meant to Civil War-era Americans and what their dreams reveal about their experiences during the war... About the product 8vo; original brown boards, lettered in white on spine; laminated pictorial dustwrapper; pp. (x) + 413, incl. index; plates; maps. Fine condition."A fascinating picture of South Africa and the British Empire during a time of great change, Dr Philip's Empire documents Philip's encounters with Dutch colonists, English settlers and indigenous South Africans, his never-ending battles with fellow missionaries and colonial authorities, and his lobbying among the powerful for indigenous people's civil rights. A controversial and influential figure, Philip was considered an interfering radical subversive by believers in white superiority, but he has been labelled a condescending, hypocritical'white liberal'in a more modern age. This book seeks to revive him from these judgements and to recover the real man and his noble but doomed struggles for justice in the context of his times." Dr Philip's Empire. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days 'It was said to me, "Better have a little of the plantation manner of speech than not; 'tis not best that you seem too learned."' Appearing in 1855, My Bondage and My Freedom is the second autobiography written by Frederick Douglass (1818-95), a man who was born into slavery in Maryland and who went on to become the most famous antislavery author, orator, philosopher, essaysist, historian, intellectual, statesman and freedom-fighter in US history. An instant bestseller, Douglass's autobiography tells the story of his early life as lived in 'bondage' and of his later life as lived in a 'freedom' that was in name only. Recognizing that his body and soul were bought and sold by white slaveholders in the US South, he soon realized his story was being traded by white northern antislavery campaigners. Douglass's My Bondage and My Freedom is a literary, intellectual and philosophical tour-de-force in which he betrays his determination not only to speak but to write 'just the word that seemed to me the word to be written by me.' This new edition examines Douglass's biography, literary strategies and political activism alongside his depiction of Black women's lives and his narrative histories of Black heroism. This volume also reproduces Frederick Douglass's only work of fiction, The Heroic Slave, published in 1853. Features Summary My Bondage and My Freedom is the second of Frederick Douglass's full-length autobiographies. An important slave autobiography, it is significant both for what it tells us about slave life and about its author. This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days Through the summer twilight in the Depression-era South, word begins to circulate of a black man accosting a white woman. In no time the awful forces of public opinion and political expediency goad the separate fears and frustrations of a small southern community into the single-mindedness of a mob. Erskine Caldwell shows the lynching of Sonny Clark through many eyes. However, Caldwell reserves some of his most powerful passages for the few who truly held Clark's life in their hands but let it go: people like Sheriff Jeff McCurtain, who did nothing to disperse the mob; Harvey Glenn, who found Clark in hiding and turned him in; and Katy Barlow, who withdrew her false charge of rape only after Clark was dead.  Hardcover, first published 1963 by Hutchinson. The card jacket is whole, but has some wear to the edges, and a few small holes and scrapes on the folds, possibly caused by insects. The brown boards with three blue wildebeest imprinted on the bottom are clean and unmarked and square. The first and last few pages have some light age-spottting, that also appears in places on the collective edge of the pages. The author has dedicated and signed the title page, at Knysna, undated. From the jacket blurb "First and foremost, The Echoing Cliffs is an enchanting story. It is about the last cave-dwellers of the Stone Age who, by a freak of history, still survived a mere three centuries ago, when the first white men landed in South Africa."
