About the product Brenthurst Second Series, number 2. Standard edition limited to 850 copies. Large 4to; original crimson cloth; laminated pictorial dustwrapper, housed in removable protector; tinted top edge; silk markers; pp. 275 + (i), incl. index; several reproductions of contemporary illustrations, in monochrome and full colour. Earlier owner's bookplate to front free endpaper. A few fox spots to fore-edge, else fine."The name of John Blades Currey (1829-1904) is seldom mentioned in histories of southern Africa. Indeed, the young Englishman who arrived at the Cape in 1850 made little direct impact on its story. He was nonetheless to become a profound influence on some of the Cape's most famous men and an astute chronicler of the political and social events of his time. His memoirs, published here for the first time, cover half a century of Cape history, from 1850 to 1900. Soldiering, farming, copper-mining - Currey tried all these; then, on the advice of governor Sir George Grey he joined the Cape civil service. While in its employ in the late 1860s he was entrusted with the task of introducing to a sceptical Europe southern Africa's first diamond, the'Eureka'. Later, as secretary to the government of Griqualand West, he chose the new name of' Kimberley 'for the burgeoning diamond-fields town of New Rush. But in 1875 Currey was blamed for the diggers'rebellion there, and this led to his dismissal from office and blighted his subsequent public career. While he was in Kimbeley Currey befriended two young fortune-hunters, both of whom were to become renowned premiers of the Cape: Cecil John Rhodes and John X. Merriman. To both of them Currey was to remain a lifelong friend and counsellor.. He is revealed in the account not as a politician but as a man who helped to shape politicians, not as a man who made history but rather as one who was passionately part of it. The manuscript forms part of The Brenthurst Collection, as do the majority of the contemporary illustrations which complement the text." Book and wrapper in very good condition - published by Hutchinson in 1972. >>> A bittersweet coming of age account of John Bowers' year and a half at a highly unconventional writer's colony run by James Jones and Lowney Handy in Marshall, Illinois. The Colony. It was 1952 and James Jones had just published from Here to Eternity, a huge best seller that had taken the country by storm. His larger-than-life mentor, a formidable Midwest housewife by the name of Lowney Handy, set up a "writer's colony" in Marshall, Illinois, funded in large part by the proceeds of Eternity, to train an odd assortment of rules: no women; members literally copied pages from masters such as Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and Dos Passos; no radios, newspapers, or TV; meals were Spartan; a neophyte moved from a tent to a barracks-like room if he abided by the rules; mail was scrutinized as in the Soviet Union; about every month members were let loose in Terre Haute for brothel time in Cherry Street and epic toots. *N.B.* If you buy more than one book from me you only pay R 6 postage on each additional book – see what else I have to offer, it might be worth your while.

John Michael Fowles has a natural talent: he understands explosives. He has a feel for them. It is a talent which he fully expects will take him onto the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list. Along the way he will match himself against the best: the FBI's elite team of bomb technicians and one person in particular - Carol Starkey, Detective in the LAPD Criminal Conspiracy Section. Starkey died for two minutes and forty seconds after being blown up by one of his bombs, and Fowles dearly wants her dead again. As the FBI attempt to find the link behind a series of bomb explosions that have been designed to kill their technicians, Special Agent Ben Williams stumbles on the bomber's secret: his desire to kill Starkey. If Williams can keep this from Starkey he can set a trap and catch the bomber. A trap that uses Carol Starkey as bait.

About the product Edited by L. A. Hewson and F. G. van der Riet. 8vo; original red cloth, lettered in gilt on spine; pictorial dustwrapper; endpaper maps; pp. (iv) + 106, incl. index; 2 plates. Merest trace of foxing to edges. Near-fine condition.'The Rev. John Ayliff, 1820 Settler and one of the pioneer missionaries of the Eastern Cape, left among his papers an unfinished manuscript, here published in full for the first time under the title The Journal of Harry Hastings, Albany Settler. It consists of a narrative mostly in diary form of the experiences of a young British settler of 1820 whom the writer calls"Harry Hastings": the four-month voyage from London to Algoa Bay, the trek to the settlement near Bathurst and the difficult months that followed. Harry Hastings is to be regarded not only as an alter ego of John Ayliff, but also as a typical British settler, a"rooinek"transplanted from Whitechapel to the Zuurveld. The narrative offers a lively and entertaining account of settler life, and a unique fund of information about the first years of the Albany Settlement.'

It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 4 - 9 working days In the 1940s, the ANC's Youth League transformed the organisation into a defiant, mass-based force that fought for freedom. Oliver Tambo was a prominent member of that Youth League, but his most important role was still to come. In 1960, the South African Government banned the ANC. Tambo was appointed to continue the ANC's fight - from outside the country. During this time, he helped strengthen the ANC's organisation and assisted in establishing underground structures inside the country. He brought the struggle for liberation in South Africa to the attention of the rest of the world and, in doing so, won the admiration and the support of all those with whom he made contact. Thirty years later, Tambo returned to his motherland and handed the ANC back to the people, intact and triumphant. They Fought for Freedom tells the life stories of southern African leaders who struggled for freedom and justice. In spite of the important roles they played in the history of southern Africa, most of these leaders have been largely ignored by the history books. The series tells their stories in an entertaining manner, in clear language and aims to restore them to their rightful place in history. A combat veteran, Puller is the man the U.S. Army relies on to investigate the toughest crimes facing the nation. Now he has a new case-but this time, the crime is personal: His aunt has been found dead in Paradise, Florida. A picture-perfect town on Florida's Gulf Coast, Paradise thrives on the wealthy tourists and retirees drawn to its gorgeous weather and beaches. The local police have ruled his aunt's death an unfortunate, tragic accident. But just before she died, she mailed a letter to Puller's father, telling him that beneath its beautiful veneer, Paradise is not all it seems to be. What Puller finds convinces him that his aunt's death was no accident... and that the palm trees and sandy beaches of Paradise may hide a conspiracy so shocking that some will go to unthinkable lengths to make sure the truth is never revealed. About the product 8vo; original blue cloth, lettered in gilt on spine, with gilt publisher's monogram to upper cover; no dustwrapper; pp. xiii + (i) + 248, incl. index; plates; some illustrations in text. Very good condition."The arrival at the Cape of Good Hope, early in 1834, of Sir John Herschel and Thomas Maclear initiated for them a period of intense scientific endeavour. Herschel was graced by a name which, from the astronomical discoveries of his father, Sir William Herschel, was already a household word. The younger Herschel was arguably the most famous scientist ever to spend a significant portion of his life in the beneficial clime of the Cape. Much has been written about Herschel's scientific work at the Cape. The picture is far from complete, however.. This gives some justification for the publication of what is in fact the majority of the letters written by Herschel during his residence at the Cape. For Maclear the situation is quite the reverse. Completely unknown on his arrival at the Cape, he had steadily to build up fame on the foundations of industry and public service. By the time of his death in 1879 his repute was such that his passing moved even the Cape Parliament to a salutation.. Yet the nature of the man is hardly known in the country of his adoption, and his contributions are largely forgotten in his chosen profession. Although a full-scale biography is required to do justice to Maclear, the diaries and letters reproduced here will go some way towards establishing his character." Maclear&Herschel. About the product 8vo; black cloth-backed brown boards, with metallic copper lettering to spine; laminated dustwrapper; pp. xii + 228, incl. index; tables. Near fine condition."It has generally been assumed that democracy, involving competition between contending parties within a constitutional framework which allows a free choice for the electorate, is not a viable form of politics in Africa and is largely irrelevant in a continent dominated by the authoritarianism of single-party and military rule. In Democracy in Black Africa: Survival and Revival, John A. Wiseman argues in detail, for the first time, that such a view is not only unduly pessimistic but is at odds with the evidence. Concentrating on the continued existence of democracy in Africa rather than its collapse, on its successes rather than its failures, a reassessment of the role of democracy emerges which is at once both positive and realistic."
