But for the majority of people in the world's most unequal society, the taste of bitter almonds linger as their exclusion from a dignified life remain the rule. In the year of South Africa's troubled coming-of-age, veteran investigative journalist Michael Schmidt brings to bear 21 years of his scribbled field notes to weave a tapestry of the view from below: here in the demi-monde of our transition from autocracy to democracy, in the half-light glow of the rusted rainbow, you will meet neo-Nazis and the newly dispossessed, Boers and Bushmen, black illegal coal miners and a bank robber, witches and wastrels, love children and land claimants. With their feet in the mud, the Born Free youth have their eyes on the stars. Book still in a very good condition - Gina was an amazing woman, according to her orbituary.  >>>   Rachel wrote " I'm not sure how to categorize this book. It's part memoir, part investigative journalism, part nostalgia, with a handful of recipes, sprinkled here and there like party favors.   Mallet divides the book into five sections: eggs, cheese, beef, kitchen gardens, and fish. I liked the egg section best and the beef section least.  The focus of this book is taste--not health, economics, or environmentalism--and I found the focus refreshing. There's no guilt involved when you're only concerned about what tastes best. The memoir sections were fun, especially the descriptions of the food department at Harrod's during and after WWII."   ·         *N.B.*   If you buy more than one book from me on the same day you only pay R 6 extra postage for each of the additional books - See what else I have to offer, it might just be worth your while.

This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days For three years, Penny Ercanbeck has been opening other people's mail. Dead ends are a reality for clerks at the Dead Letter Office. Still she dreams of something more--a bit of intrigue, a taste of romance, or at least a touch less loneliness. When a letter from a brokenhearted man to his one true love falls into her hands, Penny seizes this chance to do something heroic. It becomes her mission to place this lost letter into the hands of its intended recipient. Thomas left his former life with no intention of ending up in Azure Springs, Iowa. He certainly didn't expect a happy ending after what he had done. All he wanted to do was run and never look back. In a moment of desperation, he began to write, never really expecting a reply. When Penny's undertaking leads her to the intriguing man who touched her soul with his words, everything grows more complicated. She wants to find the rightful owner of the letter and yet she finds herself caring--perhaps too much--for the one who wrote it. Features Summary A young woman working at the Dead Letter Office in 1883 opens a series of heartbreaking love letters. She's determined to find their rightful owner and make things right...
