About the product These are the first two volumes in the'African Hunting Reprint Series.'Text facsimile reprint of the two-volume John Murray 2nd edition of 1850, with a new introduction by Professor James A. Casada. Two 8vo volumes; original brown boards with gilt lettering to spine, and gilt elephant device to upper board in each case; pictorial dustwrappers; pp. xvii + xv + (i) + 388, (iv) + 381; plates, + route map in first volume. Dustwrappers slightly rubbed and edgeworn; a little foxing to endpapers, edges and reverse of dustwrappers, occasional fox spot elsewhere. Very good condition.'A particularly fine example of Victorian sporting literature, the book was markedly successful and ran to many editions. Gordon-Cumming writes of his hunting expedition which started from Grahamstown in October 1843 and which took him through countryside teeming with game -"not with herds, but with'one vast herd'of springboks; as far as the eye could strain."- to the Orange River and Griqualand West where he met Oswell, and, at Kuruman, Robert Moffat and, soon after, David Livingstone. He appears to have hunted every species of South African fauna and to have indulged himself in the sport to an extent almost unique even amongst the mighty hunters of Africa. The narrative is valuable for its description of the country and its inhabitants, and for its zoological and botanical notes.'

Rebacked in green clothwith original spine, new end papers; colour frontispiece, plates and marginal illustrations, with the drawings of a dung beetle pushing his load with his front legs rather than his back legs on pages 65, 337 and 457 and Snowball the horse being dragged out of the river on page 316 - these drawings were changed in later impressions. Fitzpatrick's adventures during this time of his life, when he was pioneering in the Bushveld, are vividly described in his book Jock of the Bushveld, which is generally accepted as a South African classic. In the early 1900's he used to recount the adventures of his dog Jock (a Staffordshire Bull terrier cross), in the form of bedtime stories to his four children, Nugent, Alan, Oliver, and Cecily, to whom the book was dedicated - the likkle people. Rudyard Kipling, an intimate friend, used to take part in these story-telling evenings and he it was who persuaded FitzPatrick to put the stories together in book form. Having done this, FitzPatrick searched for a suitable artist to illustrate the book and eventually came across Edmund Caldwell in London and brought him to South Africa to visit the Bushveld and make the drawings on the spot. Hardcover. English. Longmans, Green and Co., London. 1922 11th impr. ISBN: n/a. 475 pp, illustrated by E Caldwell. Rebacked in green cloth with original spine retained and new end papers. Part of original flyleaf retained with blurry signature (repeated on title page). Book No: 2002131

In 1828 he moved to Graaff-Reinet, and from there accompanied a party of hunters across the Orange River. On his return he bought the printing press of Godlonton and Stringfellow, which had previously been confiscated by Governor Donkin, and set up a Printing Works in Grahamstown, when only twenty years of age. The border Settlers immediately implored him to bring out a newspaper, and he decided to establish the Graham's Town Journal. Sixty Years Ago gives an interesting account of all that this involved, and includes many light-hearted anecdotes of life on the frontier in those perilous days. The first number appeared on December 30th 1831, and in 1832 Godlonton joined Meurant as partner, and was thus re-united with the printing press that had originally been his." L. H. Spine a bit sunned; occasional fox spot. Very good condition. A very attractively illustrated unit history."THE STORY OF THE NINTH will be eagerly sought after by all past and present Sappers. Not only will it be treasured as a valuable personal memento by all who knew the 9th Field Company at close quarters, but by contributing to the funds of the Sappers Association it will assist in perpetuating the memory of Those Comrades of all S.A.E.C. Units who did not return. It became apparent in the early planning days of 1939 and 1940 that South Africa, with its high proportion of artisans and technicians, would be able to make a larger contribution in Sapper personnel than was ever likely to be needed for our own Divisional and L. of C. requirements. Rather than use this surplus of skilled man-power in a non-technical rôle, the General Staff wisely agreed to organise and train both full- and part-time Sappers for any emergency likely to arise and, as near as possible, to anticipate the need for specialized Engineer units for a multitude of purposes. The fact can now be proudly recorded that, due to this early foresight, no request for Sapper assistance from any of the various Force Headquarters, however complicated, was ever made to the U.D.F. in vain." Very good condition."In the misty morning of 17 February 1917 a crowded troopship was making its cautious way to France. Suddenly, another vessel loomed up out of the fog, and rammed the troopship which quickly sank into the icy waters of the English Channel. The stricken ship was the Mendi and the troops were black South Africans. Over 600 men lost their lives making this one of South Africa 's greatest military disasters. This is the first detailed historical account of the tragedy. The author has made extensive use of personal records and other sources to reconstruct the last voyage of the Mendi, to describe the sinking and to examine the many puzzling questions associated with the incident. Why, for example, was the Darro steaming so fast? Why did her captain take no steps to rescue survivors? Is there any truth in the legend that the men trapped on the deck of the Mendi performed a death-defying dance as the ship went down?" Norman Clothier: Black Valour.
