At the age of 22 he decided on a missionary career. He was tested and finally accepted by the London Missionary Society in 1826. He and his wife, whom he had dutifully courted and married in London, arrived at Bethelsdorp in the last quarter of 1827. He served his apprenticeship under John Brownlee at the Buffalo River from 1827 to 1832. The next six years were the most challenging of his career.
