The Potchefstroom Koekoek, bred specifically for South African conditions, is a duel purpose chicken. It was developed in the 1950s at the Potchefstroom Agricultural College in the city of Potchefstroom by Chris Marais. It was developed by cross breeding a number of other breeds like Black Australorp, White Leghorn and Barred Plymouth Rock. Koekoeks have excellent laying capabilities and can maintain good egg production even during poor or insufficient feeding.They also have a large body structure for meat production, suited to subsistence farmers. If you need a good dual purpose chicken, the Potch Koekoek is probably the most economical choice.
