With plenty of insider's insight--and without pulling any punches--Dana Kollmann introduces the real science and the actual process of crime scene investigation as she recounts her life as a CSI in all its fascinating and gritty detail. Whether explaining rigor mortis or insect infestation rates, speeding to an accident scene or cautiously entering a crime scene, she shows what it's really like to work in the front lines as a forensic expert. With an eye for detail, and a frank and often witty voice, Kollman allows readers to cross the crime-scene tape and visit a world most civilians never knew existed, letting them see and smell the bodies, hear the bugs, and walk through dozens of cases. Never Suck a Dead Man's Hand offers a perspective as informative as it is irreverent and is the first real look at the day-to-day life of a crime scene investigator.

Dead ends are a reality for clerks at the Dead Letter Office. Still she dreams of something more--a bit of intrigue, a taste of romance, or at least a touch less loneliness. When a letter from a brokenhearted man to his one true love falls into her hands, Penny seizes this chance to do something heroic. It becomes her mission to place this lost letter into the hands of its intended recipient. Thomas left his former life with no intention of ending up in Azure Springs, Iowa. He certainly didn't expect a happy ending after what he had done. All he wanted to do was run and never look back. In a moment of desperation, he began to write, never really expecting a reply. When Penny's undertaking leads her to the intriguing man who touched her soul with his words, everything grows more complicated. She wants to find the rightful owner of the letter and yet she finds herself caring--perhaps too much--for the one who wrote it. Earlier owner's bookplate to front free endpaper. A few fox spots to fore-edge, else fine."The name of John Blades Currey (1829-1904) is seldom mentioned in histories of southern Africa. Indeed, the young Englishman who arrived at the Cape in 1850 made little direct impact on its story. He was nonetheless to become a profound influence on some of the Cape's most famous men and an astute chronicler of the political and social events of his time. His memoirs, published here for the first time, cover half a century of Cape history, from 1850 to 1900. Soldiering, farming, copper-mining - Currey tried all these; then, on the advice of governor Sir George Grey he joined the Cape civil service. While in its employ in the late 1860s he was entrusted with the task of introducing to a sceptical Europe southern Africa's first diamond, the'Eureka'. Later, as secretary to the government of Griqualand West, he chose the new name of' Kimberley 'for the burgeoning diamond-fields town of New Rush. But in 1875 Currey was blamed for the diggers'rebellion there, and this led to his dismissal from office and blighted his subsequent public career. While he was in Kimbeley Currey befriended two young fortune-hunters, both of whom were to become renowned premiers of the Cape: Cecil John Rhodes and John X. Merriman. To both of them Currey was to remain a lifelong friend and counsellor.. He is revealed in the account not as a politician but as a man who helped to shape politicians, not as a man who made history but rather as one who was passionately part of it. The manuscript forms part of The Brenthurst Collection, as do the majority of the contemporary illustrations which complement the text." A picture-perfect town on Florida's Gulf Coast, Paradise thrives on the wealthy tourists and retirees drawn to its gorgeous weather and beaches. The local police have ruled his aunt's death an unfortunate, tragic accident. But just before she died, she mailed a letter to Puller's father, telling him that beneath its beautiful veneer, Paradise is not all it seems to be. What Puller finds convinces him that his aunt's death was no accident... and that the palm trees and sandy beaches of Paradise may hide a conspiracy so shocking that some will go to unthinkable lengths to make sure the truth is never revealed.           Condition of book.  Hitman Anders and the Meaning of It All by Jonas Jonasson. There are 3 available at R60 each   A madcap new novel from the #1 internationally bestselling author of  The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window  and  The Girl Who Saved the King of Sweden Hitman Anders, recently out of prison, is doing small jobs for the big gangsters. Then his life takes an unexpected turn when he meets a female Protestant vicar (who also happens to be an atheist), and a homeless receptionist at a former brothel which is now a one-star hotel. The three join forces and concoct an unusual business plan based on Hitman Anders’ skills and his fearsome reputation. The vicar and receptionist will organize jobs for a group of gangsters, and will attract customers using the tabloids’ love of lurid headlines. The perfect plan—if it weren’t for Hitman Anders’ curiosity about the meaning of it all. In conversations with the vicar, he turns to Jesus and, against all odds, Jesus answers him! The vicar can’t believe what’s happening. When Hitman Anders turns to religion, the lucrative business is in danger, and the vicar and the receptionist have to find a new plan, quick. Fast-paced and sparky, the novel follows these bizarre but loveable characters on their quest to create a New Church, with all of Sweden’s gangsters hunting them. Along the way, it explores the consequences of fanaticism, the sensationalist press, the entrepreneurial spirit and straightforward human stupidity—and underlying all of it, the tenuous hope that it’s never too late to start again.
