Near-fine condition."In December 1995 Gilbert Bland was chased from the Peabody Library of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, clutching four 232-year-old maps. He turned out to be one of the greatest map thieves in history. Miles Harvey has spent four years tracing Bland's journey from middle-class anomymity to dark criminality, attempting to understand what drove Bland to steal some of the rarest cartographic treasures in the world.. In The Island of Lost Maps Harvey with great panache and wit conveys an intriguing subculture of map junkies whose cartomania is an obsession both surreal and sublime, who see maps as'power-imbued fetishes'. It is a sparkling story of artisans, villainy and riveting adventures into the unknown." Books: The Island of Lost Maps. A True Story of Cartographic Crime

About the product 400 x 290 mm; laminated pictorial wraps; pp. xiv + 157, incl. index; profusely illustrated with contemporary photographs; map. Trace of foxing to edges. Near-fine condition."The War Reporter is an imaginary newspaper. There was no single Republican or Boer newspaper that was published on either a daily, weekly or monthly basis for the whole duration of the Anglo-Boer War. The'editor','reporters'and'correspondents'of The War Reporter never actually existed. The aim was to publish an account of the course of the war in its totality - meaning not merely the military confrontations. The format represents the way in which the war could have been reported in a pro-Boer weekly newspaper (monthly from September 1900), published in the South African Republic as the war progressed. One of the most formidable challenges that face historians is to understand the zeitgeist or atmosphere of the period they write about. The same is true for readers of history books. A failure to understand the situation at the time makes it virtually impossible to understand the major events, the decisions taken by the major participants, the reactions of the ordinary people and the contradictions of the past in the context in which they occurred. This was my biggest challenge as I attempted to portray the world and the views of the Boers as the Anglo-Boer War progressed. The book is first and foremost an attempt to answer the question: how did the Boers experience the Anglo-Boer War?"- Author's Introduction. Books: The War Reporter. The Anglo-Boer War through the eyes of the Burghers

This'new Canaan', as Lady Anne Barnard called it, is described by Dr Burrows as'one of the richest repositories of our national heritage'. The success of the first printing of this book many years ago proves his claim. The history of the Swellendam Drostdy, the short-lived Swellendam republic, the birth and development of sheep farming, glimpses of the lovely old homesteads, and the families who owned them, Van Bredas, Van Reenens, Reitzes, Moodies; the story of the fabulous Barry empire, the lost seaports; all these are revealed in a book that is not only for the collector and historian but for all who enjoy a good story and glimpses of an intriguing, romantic past." Spine a bit sunned; occasional fox spot. Very good condition. A very attractively illustrated unit history."THE STORY OF THE NINTH will be eagerly sought after by all past and present Sappers. Not only will it be treasured as a valuable personal memento by all who knew the 9th Field Company at close quarters, but by contributing to the funds of the Sappers Association it will assist in perpetuating the memory of Those Comrades of all S.A.E.C. Units who did not return. It became apparent in the early planning days of 1939 and 1940 that South Africa, with its high proportion of artisans and technicians, would be able to make a larger contribution in Sapper personnel than was ever likely to be needed for our own Divisional and L. of C. requirements. Rather than use this surplus of skilled man-power in a non-technical rôle, the General Staff wisely agreed to organise and train both full- and part-time Sappers for any emergency likely to arise and, as near as possible, to anticipate the need for specialized Engineer units for a multitude of purposes. The fact can now be proudly recorded that, due to this early foresight, no request for Sapper assistance from any of the various Force Headquarters, however complicated, was ever made to the U.D.F. in vain." Books: The Story of the Ninth. A Record of the 9th Field Company, South African Engineer Corps. July 1939 - July 1943

Wrappers and edges foxed, occasional fox spot elsewhere; earlier bookseller's ink stamp to half-title. Good."Originally published as part of the Ethnographic Survey of Africa by the International African Institute, this study of the Tswana, now in its seventh reprint, has proved one of the most respected and popular in the series. Succinctly written, it is a thorough study of a major division of the Sotho group of the Bantu-speaking peoples of Southern Africa. The Tswana, whose main homeland is Botswana, have been much written about in the twentieth century; this study, together with Professor Schapera's other writings on the Tswana, forms a very significant section of our knowledge and understanding of an important group. Continually referred to by other leading anthropologists, it remains a classic."

About the product These are the first two volumes in the'African Hunting Reprint Series.'Text facsimile reprint of the two-volume John Murray 2nd edition of 1850, with a new introduction by Professor James A. Casada. Two 8vo volumes; original brown boards with gilt lettering to spine, and gilt elephant device to upper board in each case; pictorial dustwrappers; pp. xvii + xv + (i) + 388, (iv) + 381; plates, + route map in first volume. Dustwrappers slightly rubbed and edgeworn; a little foxing to endpapers, edges and reverse of dustwrappers, occasional fox spot elsewhere. Very good condition.'A particularly fine example of Victorian sporting literature, the book was markedly successful and ran to many editions. Gordon-Cumming writes of his hunting expedition which started from Grahamstown in October 1843 and which took him through countryside teeming with game -"not with herds, but with'one vast herd'of springboks; as far as the eye could strain."- to the Orange River and Griqualand West where he met Oswell, and, at Kuruman, Robert Moffat and, soon after, David Livingstone. He appears to have hunted every species of South African fauna and to have indulged himself in the sport to an extent almost unique even amongst the mighty hunters of Africa. The narrative is valuable for its description of the country and its inhabitants, and for its zoological and botanical notes.'
