About the product Number 458 of an edition limited to 510 copies. Text facsimile of the Saul Solomon printing of 1885. 8vo; original brown cloth, lettered in gilt on spine, with publisher's device in blind to upper cover; pp. (vi) + 107 + (i) + 5, incl. index. Occasional fox spot. Near-fine condition."Louis Henry Meurant combined enterprise and ability with high ideals, and his activities during his long and varied life illuminate many aspects of the history of South Africa during the nineteenth Century.. In 1828 he moved to Graaff-Reinet, and from there accompanied a party of hunters across the Orange River. On his return he bought the printing press of Godlonton and Stringfellow, which had previously been confiscated by Governor Donkin, and set up a Printing Works in Grahamstown, when only twenty years of age. The border Settlers immediately implored him to bring out a newspaper, and he decided to establish the Graham's Town Journal. Sixty Years Ago gives an interesting account of all that this involved, and includes many light-hearted anecdotes of life on the frontier in those perilous days. The first number appeared on December 30th 1831, and in 1832 Godlonton joined Meurant as partner, and was thus re-united with the printing press that had originally been his." L. H. Meurant: Sixty Years Ago; or, Reminiscences of the Struggle for the Freedom of the Press in South Africa and the Establishment of the First Newspaper in the Eastern Province

On March 21, 1985, world-class wheelchair marathoner and multiple Paralympic medalist Rick Hansen set out from Vancouver, British Columbia, on his Man in Motion World Tour. The twenty-six-month trek took him and a small but determined crew almost 25,000 miles through 34 countries on four continents before crossing Canada. In the process, they raised $26 million for spinal cord research and for initiatives to improve the quality of life and accessibility for people with disabilities. Thirty years after the journey ended, Rick Hansen's Man in Motion Tour celebrates that ground-breaking accomplishment and, with a foreword from Rick himself, highlights the legacy of the Man in Motion World Tour and the amazing progress it has spurred up to the present day. Illustrated with exclusive photographs from the Rick Hansen Foundation archives, it is a universal story of courage and adversity, human strength and personal suffering, and, above all, the power of community to effect lasting social change. Features Summary A beautifully illustrated thirtieth-anniversary celebration of Rick Hansen's Man in Motion Tour, which broke barriers for people with disabilities and inspired ordinary citizens to realize impossible dreams. About the product Small 8vo; original paper over boards, with pictorial onlay and title label on spine, a little sunned, and slightly worn at extremities; past owner's hand stamp on front free endpaper; pp. viii + 108; some browning to endpapers; black-and-white plates. Good condition."The Cambridge undergraduate of to-day would hardly recognise his prototype of a hundred years ago, if the latter could be brought to life. The past century has wrought a vast change in his appearance, vernacular, sobriety, diversions, and general behaviour. We can congratulate ourselves, however, that a better type has been evolved, although we can still recognise to-day modified (and improved) specimens of the men who were in residence in the early twenties." Books: The Cambridge Undergraduate 100 Years Ago. Compiled, with Extracts and Illustrations from Contemporary Sources by Oskar Teichman D.S.O., M.C., M.A.
