Field Guide to the Battlefields of South Africa - Nicki von der Heyde - Struik - 2014 - Paperback in good condition. There are two major types of battlefield terrain in South Africa: first the open plains and savannah lands of the Highveld, a land where cavalry rules supreme. The second type is the thornbush of the Eastern Cape, a setting more suited to skirmishing rather than set-piece battles. Then, in KwaZulu-Natal, the two terrains merge to create the country s most dramatic battlefield landscape and one of the largest military graveyards in the world where the fates of colonies, republics and kingdoms were decided. For more than two centuries, from the late 1700s to the early 1900s, conflict, in one form or another, swept across this countryside; its combatants as diverse, hardy and tenacious as the land and its resources that almost always was at the root of hostilities. In this groundbreaking book, author and specialist battlefields guide, Nicki von der Heyde, presents over 70 battles and skirmishes covering five wars that shaped the course of South African history from the Frontier Wars that started in 1779 to the Second-Anglo Boer War of 1899 1902, a bitter and costly confrontation triggered by the discovery of the world s richest gold fields on the Witwatersrand.Detailed accounts of the engagements, based on extensive research, are provided, with special attention given to the terrain, key phases and outcomes, and the combatants involved. Battle timelines succinctly set out the passage of each campaign, while international timelines catalogue concurrent events around the world.More than 400 original documentary and contemporary photographs and over 60 short features have been assembled to provide a rich, enthralling and haunting account of these momentous events. Detailed historical maps that include annotations have been created for 16 high-profile engagements, while 10 regional maps indicate the locations of the battle sites. Arranged in regional order, with concise directions to each battle site and GPS coordinates for main locations, the "Field Guide to South Africa s Battlefields" is not only indispensable for professional and amateur military historians, but is of great interest to general readers, too if only as a reminder of the devastating human cost of war and the value of exploring the past to make sense of the present. It is beautifully illustrated with historical and contemporary photographs and detailed battle and regional maps."

Johannesburg (Gauteng)
The Visual Arts Network of South Africa (VANSA), with the support of the Department of Arts and Culture (DAC) is pleased to announce the launch of the Best Practice Guide for the Visual Arts in South Africa. The Best Practice Guide was developed out of the need to share and develop industry practices that would support healthy and ethical relationships and transactions between practitioners in the industry. The guide is written to give all people involved in the visual arts an understanding of the practice South Africa should be aiming towards for the betterment of the Visual Arts. Commissioned by the Department of Arts and Culture and written by Visual Arts Network of South Africa, the Guide is intended to support a growing and strengthening Visual Arts field. The content of the guide is extensive and covers as many fields as possible to be as accessible as possible to all. It covers a range from sales, to insurance, to taxes, to marketing and social media to the rights of practitioners in the field. We expect it will be invaluable for many people to better empower themselves to make knowledgeable decisions. The Director of VANSA, Molemo Moiloa, comments on important content in the Guide; “We are very excited to launch this guide and make it available to the South African Visual Arts Community. The Guide is aimed at giving people as much information as possible so that they can take the paths they wish to, equipped with an understanding of where those paths may lead”. The guide strongly recommends the use of written agreements in all relations for the arts – something that is not yet usual practice for artists and gallerists. The guide also makes a case for ensuring artists are paid in every circumstance possible to encourage the professionalisation of creative work and the betterment of artists’ livelihoods. The guide is aimed at all practitioners across South Africa and will be available online. VISIT THE VANSA WEBSITE TO DOWNLOAD YOUR FREE COPY NOW. Workshops will be held across South Africa where copies of the Guide will be given to participants. These Workshops are also free and will give attendees a better understanding of how to use the guide. The workshops are hosted by partners of VANSA throughout South Africa. Workshop dates and venues are listed below. The workshops are supported by the National Arts Council. View From City Hall - Reflections On Governing Cape Town (Paperback) Patricia De Lille, Craig Kesson   The City of Cape Town is a place of contrasts, the legacy of apartheid having left a distinct make-up. Yet the challenges confronting the contemporary city are notably aggravated by modern-day factors such as increasing unemployment and poverty.   In this timely work, Mayor of Cape Town Patricia de Lille and Craig Kesson, the city’s Director of Policy and Strategy, confront some of the issues of governance: how can the city help overcome social and physical segregation; how can the government live up to the promises made to South Africans; and how can the city function and heal within these limitations? "I’ve seen firsthand the progress Cape Town has made under Mayor De Lille. Successes in one city often spreads to others, and this book provides a valuable guide for how, with a bit of motivated and dynamic leadership, cities can lead the way on the most important issues of our day.” Michael Bloomberg, founder of Bloomberg L.P. and former mayor of New York City   Imprint: Jonathan Ball Publishers Country of origin: South Africa Release date: September 2017 Authors: Patricia De Lille • Craig Kesson Dimensions: 233 x 152 x 18mm (L x W x T) Format: Paperback - Trade Pages: 256 ISBN-13: 978-1-86842-786-4
