About the product South African Library General Series, Number 18. 210 x 145 mm; pictorial wrappers; pp. 78, incl. index; monochrome illustrations. Wrappers very slightly rubbed. Very good condition."Porter's Touwfontein letters are published firstly as an insider's account of an important development in the history of South Africa, for the meeting convened by the Governor in 1845 was the beginning of a chain of events which led to the appointment of a British Resident in the Transorange in the same year, the proclamation of British sovereignty over the area in 1848 and the establishment of the Orange Free State in 1854. In addition, however, the letters also provide an entertaining and informative description of conditions in the interior of South Africa in the 1840s." The Touwfontein Letters of William Porter (May-July 1845) (Karel Schoeman)

Field Guide to the Battlefields of South Africa - Nicki von der Heyde - Struik - 2014 - Paperback in good condition. There are two major types of battlefield terrain in South Africa: first the open plains and savannah lands of the Highveld, a land where cavalry rules supreme. The second type is the thornbush of the Eastern Cape, a setting more suited to skirmishing rather than set-piece battles. Then, in KwaZulu-Natal, the two terrains merge to create the country s most dramatic battlefield landscape and one of the largest military graveyards in the world where the fates of colonies, republics and kingdoms were decided. For more than two centuries, from the late 1700s to the early 1900s, conflict, in one form or another, swept across this countryside; its combatants as diverse, hardy and tenacious as the land and its resources that almost always was at the root of hostilities. In this groundbreaking book, author and specialist battlefields guide, Nicki von der Heyde, presents over 70 battles and skirmishes covering five wars that shaped the course of South African history from the Frontier Wars that started in 1779 to the Second-Anglo Boer War of 1899 1902, a bitter and costly confrontation triggered by the discovery of the world s richest gold fields on the Witwatersrand.Detailed accounts of the engagements, based on extensive research, are provided, with special attention given to the terrain, key phases and outcomes, and the combatants involved. Battle timelines succinctly set out the passage of each campaign, while international timelines catalogue concurrent events around the world.More than 400 original documentary and contemporary photographs and over 60 short features have been assembled to provide a rich, enthralling and haunting account of these momentous events. Detailed historical maps that include annotations have been created for 16 high-profile engagements, while 10 regional maps indicate the locations of the battle sites. Arranged in regional order, with concise directions to each battle site and GPS coordinates for main locations, the "Field Guide to South Africa s Battlefields" is not only indispensable for professional and amateur military historians, but is of great interest to general readers, too if only as a reminder of the devastating human cost of war and the value of exploring the past to make sense of the present. It is beautifully illustrated with historical and contemporary photographs and detailed battle and regional maps."

About the product Brenthurst Second Series, number 2. Standard edition limited to 850 copies. Large 4to; original crimson cloth; laminated pictorial dustwrapper, housed in removable protector; tinted top edge; silk markers; pp. 275 + (i), incl. index; several reproductions of contemporary illustrations, in monochrome and full colour. Earlier owner's bookplate to front free endpaper. A few fox spots to fore-edge, else fine."The name of John Blades Currey (1829-1904) is seldom mentioned in histories of southern Africa. Indeed, the young Englishman who arrived at the Cape in 1850 made little direct impact on its story. He was nonetheless to become a profound influence on some of the Cape's most famous men and an astute chronicler of the political and social events of his time. His memoirs, published here for the first time, cover half a century of Cape history, from 1850 to 1900. Soldiering, farming, copper-mining - Currey tried all these; then, on the advice of governor Sir George Grey he joined the Cape civil service. While in its employ in the late 1860s he was entrusted with the task of introducing to a sceptical Europe southern Africa's first diamond, the'Eureka'. Later, as secretary to the government of Griqualand West, he chose the new name of' Kimberley 'for the burgeoning diamond-fields town of New Rush. But in 1875 Currey was blamed for the diggers'rebellion there, and this led to his dismissal from office and blighted his subsequent public career. While he was in Kimbeley Currey befriended two young fortune-hunters, both of whom were to become renowned premiers of the Cape: Cecil John Rhodes and John X. Merriman. To both of them Currey was to remain a lifelong friend and counsellor.. He is revealed in the account not as a politician but as a man who helped to shape politicians, not as a man who made history but rather as one who was passionately part of it. The manuscript forms part of The Brenthurst Collection, as do the majority of the contemporary illustrations which complement the text." Books: John Blades Currey 1850 to 1900: Fifty Years in the Cape Colony

350 Pages - Very good condition even though front cover shows some wear - A disturbingly prophetic account of the events leading up to World War II, this anthology is a collection of Churchill’s reporting for the Daily Telegraph and the Evening Standard from 1936 to 1939—tracing Hitler’s rise to power, the Nazi invasion of the Rhineland, and other events leading up to the declaration of war. In the first few years of Nazi ascendance, many European intellectuals and leaders advocated avoiding war and negotiating with Hitler. Churchill is one of the few who understood the scope of the Nazi threat and advocated armament against Germany early on—and his early prescience serves as a fine prediction of his determined stance against Hitler as a World War II leader and statesman. *N.B.* If you buy more than one book from me you only pay R 6 postage on each additional book – see what else I have to offer, it might be worth your while.

In particular I have done my best to draw a pen picture of my beloved father, Eric Anderson Walker, as I knew him and his famous works. I have glossed over my own sadnesses and heartaches and extracted some of the more light-hearted anecdotes from the kaleidoscope of my life, referring'pari passu'to episodes in recent and contemporary History as they have impinged on me."

The past century has wrought a vast change in his appearance, vernacular, sobriety, diversions, and general behaviour.
