So, Were you glad, deep down? Were you glad to be rid of her? Your perfect sister? Were you secretly glad when she was killed? Following a horrific tragedy that leaves her once perfect family devastated, Katherine Patterson moves to a new city, starts at a new school, and looks forward to a new life of quiet anonymity. But when Katherine meets the gregarious and beautiful Alice Parrie her resolution to live a solitary life becomes difficult. Katherine is unable resist the flattering attention that Alice pays her and is so charmed by Alice's contagious enthusiasm that the two girls soon become firm friends. Alice's joie de vivre is transformative; it helps Katherine forget her painful past and slowly, tentatively, Katherine allows herself to start enjoying life again. But being friends with Alice is complicated - and as Katherine gets to know her better she discovers that although Alice can be charming and generous she can also be selfish and egocentric. Sometimes, even, Alice is cruel. And when Katherine starts to wonder if Alice is really the kind of person she wants as a friend, she discovers something else about Alice - she doesn't like being cast off. Shocking and utterly absorbing, Rebecca James's strong narrative will grip readers from the very first page. BEAUTIFUL MALICE has become a publishing phenomenon, sparking numerous auctions worldwide, selling to 27 countries, and launching a previously unknown writer into the centre of the international book market. Designed with simplicity in mind, it's the perfect book for beginners as the toys are made up of only the easiest stitches. Based on the Japanese craze of amigurumi, the craft of creating ultra-cute crocheted creatures, you'll be sure to find a friend that you'll love. Each toy has its own unique story, so why not get to know the whole family? There's Nicki, the author, Andy the Alien, who came to Earth in search of cheese, and Boris the Baby with his political ambitions. You could also pay a visit to Mr and Mrs Bertie Buff-Orpington, the dancing chickens, and spend some time with their constantly growing brood. Down on the farm you will find a whole bunch of mischievous animals, like Ned the Goat, who thinks he's a chicken, and Pickle the Puppy, who is training to be in the Olympics. Say hello to Camilla the Pretty Pony and she may even take you out for a ride through the fields. If you're looking for some more exotic animals there are plenty here too, like Squiddly Dudley, the octopus who decided to join the Navy, or catch the Fish Brothers before they head off on their world tour. There are even some special toys for Christmas, including Sparkles the crooning Snowman and Ralph the Red Nose Reindeer. All the patterns are so simple and easy to follow, all you need is a hook and a few basic stitches and you'll have crocheted your own cute friends in no time. Vertical crease to upper wrap; some moderate foxing; pencilled genealogical tables inside wraps; a little underlining. Very good overall."Sarah Ann Slater kept letters, and several hundred from relations and friends fill the old campaign chest at Carnarvon Dale. We are printing in several booklets some of these letters, which include those written to each other by Sarah and her husband John Slater, and those of the Bonnin sisters and the Blands. The children of John and Sarah wrote home from schools, the Diamond Fields in the 1870's, Johannesburg in the 1880's and 1890's, from Rhodesia 1890, on service during the Boer War and from England. There are also numbers of letters from their grandchildren and from their relatives, the Parkers, Blands, Wilmots, Hobsons, Berringtons and Slaters."- editor's introduction. The letters provide a clear window in the life of an extended 1820 Settler family.
