Coldest winter

Doringboom Guesthouse is a lovely little cottage sleeping six guests. It is situated in Sutherland on a working farm. The cottage consists of two bedrooms, one bathroom, a fully equipped kitchen and an open-plan living area. There is also an inside fireplace. This is a very peaceful and quiet place to escape from the busy life. The unit offers Wi-Fi: please ask for the password and wood can be provided on request. The TV has the standard SABC channels only. Please bring your own towels. There is only MTN signal nearby. Sutherland is a space of clear skies, where one can marvel at the stars that sweep the outer limits. Astronomers come to use the telescopes of the South African Astronomical Observatory regularly. Sutherland is one of the coldest towns in the country, with frequent snow falls during winter and the looming Roggeveld Mountains bedecked in snow. Sutherland is also close to the sites of the unique Corbel Houses, only found in this region in and around the towns of Fraserburg, Williston and Carnarvon. To the south of Sutherland is an eroded volcano by the name of Salpeterkop which one can explore. Sterboom Guest House is a self-catering house, situated close to the town of Sutherland. It's also one of the coldest towns in the country with frequent snow falls during winter. Sterboom Guest House is named after the unique endangered veld plant which is called Star Cliffortia/Cliffortia Arborea. It is confined to the mountains around Sutherland on a southern peak, high up in the mountains. The house consists of a fully equipped open-plan kitchen living area/ that is gas operated, and an indoor braai and fireplace with firewood on request. The two spacious rooms can sleep up to seven guests maybe 8. On offer is the opportunity to experience a working Karoo farm, hiking trails, some game roaming around and spectacular sunsets, all with warm Karoo hospitality. Please note only 1 bathroom. They say we are the coldest town in South Africa, but at Sutherland Guest House we will warm-heartedly welcome you.  This is a typical Karoo-style house built with stone and sporting a big verandah and thick walls. The house is suitable for two to 10 people and may be hired to a group of people who would like to do self-catering. We can also spoil you with a lovely farm-style breakfast. The rooms have their own bathrooms and the beds have electric blankets for those chilly winter nights. Each room has coffee and tea facilities. In the big lounge and dining room you can relax in front of a warm fire and forget about all your troubles. Sutherland is known for the Southern Africa Large Telescope at the observatory, a mere 15 km from town. You can do a day or night tour at the observatory, but bookings are essential. The museum, the birthplace of the Afrikaans writers and poets, NP van Wyk Louw and his brother, EG Louw is also worth a visit. The Dutch Reform Church, with its beautiful organ and history of the Anglo Boer War is a must see.
