View From City Hall - Reflections On Governing Cape Town (Paperback) Patricia De Lille, Craig Kesson   The City of Cape Town is a place of contrasts, the legacy of apartheid having left a distinct make-up. Yet the challenges confronting the contemporary city are notably aggravated by modern-day factors such as increasing unemployment and poverty.   In this timely work, Mayor of Cape Town Patricia de Lille and Craig Kesson, the city’s Director of Policy and Strategy, confront some of the issues of governance: how can the city help overcome social and physical segregation; how can the government live up to the promises made to South Africans; and how can the city function and heal within these limitations? "I’ve seen firsthand the progress Cape Town has made under Mayor De Lille. Successes in one city often spreads to others, and this book provides a valuable guide for how, with a bit of motivated and dynamic leadership, cities can lead the way on the most important issues of our day.” Michael Bloomberg, founder of Bloomberg L.P. and former mayor of New York City   Imprint: Jonathan Ball Publishers Country of origin: South Africa Release date: September 2017 Authors: Patricia De Lille • Craig Kesson Dimensions: 233 x 152 x 18mm (L x W x T) Format: Paperback - Trade Pages: 256 ISBN-13: 978-1-86842-786-4

The old hamlet of Hale End is even more elusive, but is a vital community with its own identity. Early settlers came to the Great Forest of Waltham and, from the Tudor period to the Victorian era, the beautiful forest around Hale End, and its proximity to the City, appealed to Lord Mayors of London and wealthy merchant bankers. Epping Forest and the lake attracted day trippers, who came by rail to Hale End station, but the urban village of Highams Park only began to develop in the 20th century, when a plastics factory was established there. Suddenly shops, schools and affordable houses were being built for factory workers and City clerks, and a lively community was created. Fascinating people have always lived in the area, from Haldan in Saxon times to the designers of the Airship R101 and Concorde more recently. Charmingly written, this book will appeal to residents and social historians alike. Features Summary A history of Highams Park and Hale End, new in paperback Author M. L. 'The City of Cape Town is heading for disaster and is already in deep crisis if one cares to look close enough. The recent proliferation of public construction, public squares and public housing along the N2 towards the airport is little more than a mirage compared with the direction of more underlying trends. Cape Town's grim future is born out of the confluence of the globalised economic and ecological collapse that is fast becoming the defining feature of the twenty-first century. It is manifested most starkly in the dire situation that faces the majority of the city's residents, who are excluded from the formal economy and must rely on substandard public services and their own makeshift shelters. The scenario is serious enough to draw everyone's attention but should be set against the broader issues of long-term economic resilience and environmental sustainability to achieve a low-carbon society - so we have our work cut out for us. The purpose of this volume is to demystify these challenges and present readers with a creative portfolio of thinking, practice and strong vision to show that we can find alternatives - and, moreover, that these alternatives are already emerging in (marginal) sections of the state, civil society and the business sectors.'--Introd.
