About the product 8vo; original blue cloth, lettered in gilt on spine, with gilt publisher's monogram to upper cover; no dustwrapper; pp. xiii + (i) + 248, incl. index; plates; some illustrations in text. Very good condition."The arrival at the Cape of Good Hope, early in 1834, of Sir John Herschel and Thomas Maclear initiated for them a period of intense scientific endeavour. Herschel was graced by a name which, from the astronomical discoveries of his father, Sir William Herschel, was already a household word. The younger Herschel was arguably the most famous scientist ever to spend a significant portion of his life in the beneficial clime of the Cape. Much has been written about Herschel's scientific work at the Cape. The picture is far from complete, however.. This gives some justification for the publication of what is in fact the majority of the letters written by Herschel during his residence at the Cape. For Maclear the situation is quite the reverse. Completely unknown on his arrival at the Cape, he had steadily to build up fame on the foundations of industry and public service. By the time of his death in 1879 his repute was such that his passing moved even the Cape Parliament to a salutation.. Yet the nature of the man is hardly known in the country of his adoption, and his contributions are largely forgotten in his chosen profession. Although a full-scale biography is required to do justice to Maclear, the diaries and letters reproduced here will go some way towards establishing his character." Maclear&Herschel. About the product 8vo; original green rexine, lettered in black on spine and upper cover; pp. (viii) + 116, incl. index; plates; maps, incl. folding. Very good condition. Uncommon. The author attempts"to describe how, between 1871 and 1881, the Cape government on behalf of the British Government, performed the task of ruling the Basotho, who had become British subjects in March 1868. Several problems arose from this exercise in government by proxy. The attitude of the Basotho towards the Cape, for example, hinted at their dissatisfaction with the arrangement. From time to time their spokesmen said they would have preferred direct rule by England, and were a little unhappy to find themselves wards of the Cape Colony. The Cape's relations with the republic of the Orange Free State were in danger of becoming less cordial because of the treatment of the Basotho by the officials and/or ordinary citizens of that country, which sometimes elicited protests from the Cape authorities. Then there was always the question of the Cape's administration of the Africans within its borders, which could influence it to manage the affairs of Lesotho in a manner likely to be unpopular with the Basotho." J. M. Mohapeloa: Government by Proxy. Ten years of Cape Colony rule in Lesotho 1871-1881

View From City Hall - Reflections On Governing Cape Town (Paperback) Patricia De Lille, Craig Kesson   The City of Cape Town is a place of contrasts, the legacy of apartheid having left a distinct make-up. Yet the challenges confronting the contemporary city are notably aggravated by modern-day factors such as increasing unemployment and poverty.   In this timely work, Mayor of Cape Town Patricia de Lille and Craig Kesson, the city’s Director of Policy and Strategy, confront some of the issues of governance: how can the city help overcome social and physical segregation; how can the government live up to the promises made to South Africans; and how can the city function and heal within these limitations? "I’ve seen firsthand the progress Cape Town has made under Mayor De Lille. Successes in one city often spreads to others, and this book provides a valuable guide for how, with a bit of motivated and dynamic leadership, cities can lead the way on the most important issues of our day.” Michael Bloomberg, founder of Bloomberg L.P. and former mayor of New York City   Imprint: Jonathan Ball Publishers Country of origin: South Africa Release date: September 2017 Authors: Patricia De Lille • Craig Kesson Dimensions: 233 x 152 x 18mm (L x W x T) Format: Paperback - Trade Pages: 256 ISBN-13: 978-1-86842-786-4

About the product Number 492 of an edition limited 740 copies, signed by James Walton and the three other contributors. 4to; original blue boards, lettered in gilt on spine and upper cover; pictorial dustwrapper; endpaper plan; pp. xi + (i) + 96, incl. index; several maps, monochrome illustrations after contemporary photographs and artwork; line drawings. Dustwrapper and edges slightly rubbed; sporadic, light foxing. Very good condition."The owners of the Josephine Mill were people who played a very important part in the development of Cape Town and South Africa, and two of them, Jacob Letterstedt and Anders Ohlsson, were pioneers in the establishment of the milling and brewing industries in the country. Their activities in the political and social fields were also far-reaching. The book, however, is not confined to the Josephine Mill and its owners. It provides a historical record of every water-mill which existed in Cape Town and vicinity and, as Newlands has always been a centre of the brewing industry, it therefore deals with the growth of that industry at the Cape. Most of the ninety illustrations are line drawings and half-tones which have not been published previously or which have been produced specially for the book. The text similarly includes a great deal of historical information about the Cape, and Newlands in particular, which has not been published before or is to be found in printed sources not readily accessible. It covers a time-span of over three hundred years from the first burgher settlement along the Liesbeek River to the present day." The Josephine Mill and Its Owners. The story of Milling and Brewing at the Cape of Good Hope (James Walton, and others)

Field Guide to the Battlefields of South Africa - Nicki von der Heyde - Struik - 2014 - Paperback in good condition. There are two major types of battlefield terrain in South Africa: first the open plains and savannah lands of the Highveld, a land where cavalry rules supreme. The second type is the thornbush of the Eastern Cape, a setting more suited to skirmishing rather than set-piece battles. Then, in KwaZulu-Natal, the two terrains merge to create the country s most dramatic battlefield landscape and one of the largest military graveyards in the world where the fates of colonies, republics and kingdoms were decided. For more than two centuries, from the late 1700s to the early 1900s, conflict, in one form or another, swept across this countryside; its combatants as diverse, hardy and tenacious as the land and its resources that almost always was at the root of hostilities. In this groundbreaking book, author and specialist battlefields guide, Nicki von der Heyde, presents over 70 battles and skirmishes covering five wars that shaped the course of South African history from the Frontier Wars that started in 1779 to the Second-Anglo Boer War of 1899 1902, a bitter and costly confrontation triggered by the discovery of the world s richest gold fields on the Witwatersrand.Detailed accounts of the engagements, based on extensive research, are provided, with special attention given to the terrain, key phases and outcomes, and the combatants involved. Battle timelines succinctly set out the passage of each campaign, while international timelines catalogue concurrent events around the world.More than 400 original documentary and contemporary photographs and over 60 short features have been assembled to provide a rich, enthralling and haunting account of these momentous events. Detailed historical maps that include annotations have been created for 16 high-profile engagements, while 10 regional maps indicate the locations of the battle sites. Arranged in regional order, with concise directions to each battle site and GPS coordinates for main locations, the "Field Guide to South Africa s Battlefields" is not only indispensable for professional and amateur military historians, but is of great interest to general readers, too if only as a reminder of the devastating human cost of war and the value of exploring the past to make sense of the present. It is beautifully illustrated with historical and contemporary photographs and detailed battle and regional maps."

Paperback. English. Harvill Secker. 2007. In fair/good condition. The most important things are hardest to find words for, her father once said. That's why people make music. When Ana returns to the ramshackle cottage of her youth in the seaside village of Noordhoek, near Cape Town, she does so with the intention of sorting out her father's affairs. It soon becomes clear that more is at stake. After a decade in London, where she has failed to find work as a musician, her return to South Africa puts further distance into an already strained marriage, not only because she is out of reach, but because Michael, her husband, has lost faith in the country. Quick to welcome her is her neighbour, Franz van der Veer, an architect searching for redemption. This is further complicated by the arrival of his eccentric brother, Daniel. Against a tangle of childhood memories, scarred histories and renewed hope, Ana finally starts to confront the death of Sam, her Irish luthier father, and with it, questions of guilt and belonging. Lyrical and beautifully told, 'Quarter Tones' is a story about music and love and loss.
