Book and wrapper in very good condition - published by Hutchinson in 1972. >>> A bittersweet coming of age account of John Bowers' year and a half at a highly unconventional writer's colony run by James Jones and Lowney Handy in Marshall, Illinois. The Colony. It was 1952 and James Jones had just published from Here to Eternity, a huge best seller that had taken the country by storm. His larger-than-life mentor, a formidable Midwest housewife by the name of Lowney Handy, set up a "writer's colony" in Marshall, Illinois, funded in large part by the proceeds of Eternity, to train an odd assortment of rules: no women; members literally copied pages from masters such as Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and Dos Passos; no radios, newspapers, or TV; meals were Spartan; a neophyte moved from a tent to a barracks-like room if he abided by the rules; mail was scrutinized as in the Soviet Union; about every month members were let loose in Terre Haute for brothel time in Cherry Street and epic toots. *N.B.* If you buy more than one book from me you only pay R 6 postage on each additional book – see what else I have to offer, it might be worth your while.

About the product Number 492 of an edition limited 740 copies, signed by James Walton and the three other contributors. 4to; original blue boards, lettered in gilt on spine and upper cover; pictorial dustwrapper; endpaper plan; pp. xi + (i) + 96, incl. index; several maps, monochrome illustrations after contemporary photographs and artwork; line drawings. Dustwrapper and edges slightly rubbed; sporadic, light foxing. Very good condition."The owners of the Josephine Mill were people who played a very important part in the development of Cape Town and South Africa, and two of them, Jacob Letterstedt and Anders Ohlsson, were pioneers in the establishment of the milling and brewing industries in the country. Their activities in the political and social fields were also far-reaching. The book, however, is not confined to the Josephine Mill and its owners. It provides a historical record of every water-mill which existed in Cape Town and vicinity and, as Newlands has always been a centre of the brewing industry, it therefore deals with the growth of that industry at the Cape. Most of the ninety illustrations are line drawings and half-tones which have not been published previously or which have been produced specially for the book. The text similarly includes a great deal of historical information about the Cape, and Newlands in particular, which has not been published before or is to be found in printed sources not readily accessible. It covers a time-span of over three hundred years from the first burgher settlement along the Liesbeek River to the present day." The Josephine Mill and Its Owners. The story of Milling and Brewing at the Cape of Good Hope (James Walton, and others)

So, Were you glad, deep down? Were you glad to be rid of her? Your perfect sister? Were you secretly glad when she was killed? Following a horrific tragedy that leaves her once perfect family devastated, Katherine Patterson moves to a new city, starts at a new school, and looks forward to a new life of quiet anonymity. But when Katherine meets the gregarious and beautiful Alice Parrie her resolution to live a solitary life becomes difficult. Katherine is unable resist the flattering attention that Alice pays her and is so charmed by Alice's contagious enthusiasm that the two girls soon become firm friends. Alice's joie de vivre is transformative; it helps Katherine forget her painful past and slowly, tentatively, Katherine allows herself to start enjoying life again. But being friends with Alice is complicated - and as Katherine gets to know her better she discovers that although Alice can be charming and generous she can also be selfish and egocentric. Sometimes, even, Alice is cruel. And when Katherine starts to wonder if Alice is really the kind of person she wants as a friend, she discovers something else about Alice - she doesn't like being cast off. Shocking and utterly absorbing, Rebecca James's strong narrative will grip readers from the very first page. BEAUTIFUL MALICE has become a publishing phenomenon, sparking numerous auctions worldwide, selling to 27 countries, and launching a previously unknown writer into the centre of the international book market. This product ships within 3-5 working days.

About the product These are the first two volumes in the'African Hunting Reprint Series.'Text facsimile reprint of the two-volume John Murray 2nd edition of 1850, with a new introduction by Professor James A. Casada. Two 8vo volumes; original brown boards with gilt lettering to spine, and gilt elephant device to upper board in each case; pictorial dustwrappers; pp. xvii + xv + (i) + 388, (iv) + 381; plates, + route map in first volume. Dustwrappers slightly rubbed and edgeworn; a little foxing to endpapers, edges and reverse of dustwrappers, occasional fox spot elsewhere. Very good condition.'A particularly fine example of Victorian sporting literature, the book was markedly successful and ran to many editions. Gordon-Cumming writes of his hunting expedition which started from Grahamstown in October 1843 and which took him through countryside teeming with game -"not with herds, but with'one vast herd'of springboks; as far as the eye could strain."- to the Orange River and Griqualand West where he met Oswell, and, at Kuruman, Robert Moffat and, soon after, David Livingstone. He appears to have hunted every species of South African fauna and to have indulged himself in the sport to an extent almost unique even amongst the mighty hunters of Africa. The narrative is valuable for its description of the country and its inhabitants, and for its zoological and botanical notes.'
