This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 4 - 10 working days When her beloved small dog died, Bel Mooney was astonished at the depth of her ongoing sorrow. Sharing her loss online and in a newspaper article brought a deluge of responses, spurring Bel to explore these feelings further. Why do humans mourn pets? Can animals themselves grieve - and do they have souls? In Goodbye, Pet & See You in Heaven, Bel sets off on an emotional journey to learn more about pet bereavement. She is astounded by inexplicable 'signs' of her dog's spirit, watches Bonnie's ashes being turned into glass, talks to experts and discusses the mysterious enduring energy of love. She discovers why Ancient Egyptians mummified animals and what different faiths, myths, writers and scientists have to say. She also looks back over her own life and reflects on lessons learned from companion animals - and from wildlife too. As informative as it is deeply moving, Goodbye, Pet is an intensely personal, uplifting look at the love we share with pets, both in life and afterwards. Enriched by heartfelt stories and inspirational words, it is a book to be treasured by anyone who has ever loved an animal. Features Summary A deeply moving exploration of feelings humans extend to their pets, by one of Britain's best-loved agony aunts. Rebacked in green clothwith original spine, new end papers; colour frontispiece, plates and marginal illustrations, with the drawings of a dung beetle pushing his load with his front legs rather than his back legs on pages 65, 337 and 457 and Snowball the horse being dragged out of the river on page 316 - these drawings were changed in later impressions. Fitzpatrick's adventures during this time of his life, when he was pioneering in the Bushveld, are vividly described in his book Jock of the Bushveld, which is generally accepted as a South African classic. In the early 1900's he used to recount the adventures of his dog Jock (a Staffordshire Bull terrier cross), in the form of bedtime stories to his four children, Nugent, Alan, Oliver, and Cecily, to whom the book was dedicated - the likkle people. Rudyard Kipling, an intimate friend, used to take part in these story-telling evenings and he it was who persuaded FitzPatrick to put the stories together in book form. Having done this, FitzPatrick searched for a suitable artist to illustrate the book and eventually came across Edmund Caldwell in London and brought him to South Africa to visit the Bushveld and make the drawings on the spot. Hardcover. English. Longmans, Green and Co., London. 1922 11th impr. ISBN: n/a. 475 pp, illustrated by E Caldwell. Rebacked in green cloth with original spine retained and new end papers. Part of original flyleaf retained with blurry signature (repeated on title page). Book No: 2002131

To the memory of my dog Sam, unwittingly exchanged for an otter. The scene of this book is Skuilplek near Gansbaai. At first the cottage is inhabited by the author and her family, but one lazy Sunday afternoon the peace and quiet of Skuilplek is shaterred when a babby otter is caught in the stream adjoining the cottage. The trails of feeding Oswald and teaching him to swim have begun.
