About the product Number 458 of an edition limited to 510 copies. Text facsimile of the Saul Solomon printing of 1885. 8vo; original brown cloth, lettered in gilt on spine, with publisher's device in blind to upper cover; pp. (vi) + 107 + (i) + 5, incl. index. Occasional fox spot. Near-fine condition."Louis Henry Meurant combined enterprise and ability with high ideals, and his activities during his long and varied life illuminate many aspects of the history of South Africa during the nineteenth Century.. In 1828 he moved to Graaff-Reinet, and from there accompanied a party of hunters across the Orange River. On his return he bought the printing press of Godlonton and Stringfellow, which had previously been confiscated by Governor Donkin, and set up a Printing Works in Grahamstown, when only twenty years of age. The border Settlers immediately implored him to bring out a newspaper, and he decided to establish the Graham's Town Journal. Sixty Years Ago gives an interesting account of all that this involved, and includes many light-hearted anecdotes of life on the frontier in those perilous days. The first number appeared on December 30th 1831, and in 1832 Godlonton joined Meurant as partner, and was thus re-united with the printing press that had originally been his." L. H. Meurant: Sixty Years Ago; or, Reminiscences of the Struggle for the Freedom of the Press in South Africa and the Establishment of the First Newspaper in the Eastern Province

About the product Small 8vo; original paper over boards, with pictorial onlay and title label on spine, a little sunned, and slightly worn at extremities; past owner's hand stamp on front free endpaper; pp. viii + 108; some browning to endpapers; black-and-white plates. Good condition."The Cambridge undergraduate of to-day would hardly recognise his prototype of a hundred years ago, if the latter could be brought to life. The past century has wrought a vast change in his appearance, vernacular, sobriety, diversions, and general behaviour. We can congratulate ourselves, however, that a better type has been evolved, although we can still recognise to-day modified (and improved) specimens of the men who were in residence in the early twenties." Books: The Cambridge Undergraduate 100 Years Ago. Compiled, with Extracts and Illustrations from Contemporary Sources by Oskar Teichman D.S.O., M.C., M.A.

It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days 'One of our finest storytellers,' Sarah Perry, author of The Essex Serpent The gods were as real as the coastlines and currents, and as merciless as the winds and whirlpools. For centuries the gods of the Undersea ruled the islands of the Myriad through awe and terror: they were very real, and very dangerous. Sacrifices were hurled into the waters to appease them, and every boat was painted with pleading eyes to entreat their mercy. They were served, feared and adored. Then, thirty years ago, the gods rose up in madness and tore each other apart. Now, none remain. The islands have recovered and the people have patched their battered ships and moved on. On one of these islands live Hark and his best friend Jelt. To them, the gods are nothing but a collection of valuable scraps to be scavenged from the ocean and sold. But now something is pulsing beneath the waves, calling to someone brave enough to retrieve it. Features Summary The gods are dead, but their remains are stirring beneath the waves... The story of a friendship as deep and dangerous as the ocean by the Costa Award-winning author of The Lie Tree. South Africa (All cities)
Hardcover, first published 1963 by Hutchinson. The card jacket is whole, but has some wear to the edges, and a few small holes and scrapes on the folds, possibly caused by insects. The brown boards with three blue wildebeest imprinted on the bottom are clean and unmarked and square. The first and last few pages have some light age-spottting, that also appears in places on the collective edge of the pages. The author has dedicated and signed the title page, at Knysna, undated. From the jacket blurb "First and foremost, The Echoing Cliffs is an enchanting story. It is about the last cave-dwellers of the Stone Age who, by a freak of history, still survived a mere three centuries ago, when the first white men landed in South Africa."

Wow, from 1989 to 1990. That's around 29 to 30 years ago, and the only damage is a bit of water rot on the right hand side of the comics. Thankfully all the pages are not stuck together, readable and very enjoyable. Certainly a blast from the past, and even if it is just for a quick read, still very worth it.

This'new Canaan', as Lady Anne Barnard called it, is described by Dr Burrows as'one of the richest repositories of our national heritage'. The success of the first printing of this book many years ago proves his claim. The history of the Swellendam Drostdy, the short-lived Swellendam republic, the birth and development of sheep farming, glimpses of the lovely old homesteads, and the families who owned them, Van Bredas, Van Reenens, Reitzes, Moodies; the story of the fabulous Barry empire, the lost seaports; all these are revealed in a book that is not only for the collector and historian but for all who enjoy a good story and glimpses of an intriguing, romantic past." It was as long ago as 1820 that the first attempts were made to establish a harbour and it was not abandoned for nearly a century, yet at one time there were as many as a dozen ships in the harbour".

I celebrated my life spent on earth few days ago and upon reflection I realise just how many of us adults carry wounded children within us. Our responsibilities and everything else that we do to keep busy has covered up our childhood trauma and as a result we are blind to our childhood trauma and because we cannot touch it, we simply cannot see it. The levels of childhood trauma are different from person to person and it is the subtle trauma in the forms of struggling with fitting in with our peer groups, parental neglect or even abandonment were we tend to miss it! We are more open to recognising and calling out trauma once it's reached severe levels such as (obvious) abuse. As adults, we cannot take away the fact that we were once children at one time of our lives and just because we have grown older it doesn’t mean the children within us vanish. It is in adulthood were we should awaken our inner child from the unconscious parts of us. ✅We should (seek to) be proactive in fostering better and healthier relationships with ourselves and our 'past' so as to set free that which has been suppressed and respond to situations or challenges from a place of LOVE especially were our own children are concerned. -My birthday wish is to create safe environments for partnering, trust and connectedness which is what I have found to be the missing link with most parents who wish to stop power struggles and parent differently from how they were raised. - I have reserved your share of the cup cake --Follow on Instagram / Facebook @ Conscious_Thoko: - For safe environments for ourselves as parents and for our children to thrive!
