In 1975 Kapuscinski's employers sent him to Angola to cover the civil war that had broken out after independence. For months he watched as Luanda and then the rest of the country collapsed into a civil war that was in the author's words 'sloppy, dogged and cruel'. In his account, Kapuscinski demonstrates an extraordinary capacity to describe and to explain the individual meaning of grand political abstractions. Features Summary In 1975 Kapuscinski flew into Luanda in Angola, to cover the murderous civil war that had broken out after independence. This book is a record of his experiences there... This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 4 - 8 working days Advocate Thuli Madonsela has achieved in her seven years as Public Protector what few accomplish in a lifetime; her legacy and contribution cannot be over-stated. In her final days in office she compiled the explosive State Capture report and, before that, the report on President Jacob Zuma's Nkandla residence. Praised and vilified in equal measures, Madonsela has frequently found herself at centre stage in the increasingly fractious South African political scene. Yet, despite the intense media scrutiny, Madonsela remains something of an enigma. Who is this soft-spoken woman who stood up to state corruption? Where did she develop her views and resolve? This book attempts to answer these questions, and others, by exploring many aspects of Madonsela's life: her childhood years and family, her involvement in student politics, her contribution to the constitution, her life in law. Madonsela once described her role as Public Protector as being akin to that of the Venda traditional spiritual female leader, the Makhadzi, who whispers truth to the ruler. When the sounds of the exchanges between the ruler and the Makhadzi grow loud, Madonsela said, that is when the whispering has failed. No Longer Whispering to Power is about Thuli Madonsela's tenure as Public Protector, during which the whisper grew into a cry. It is the story of the South African people's attempt to hold power to account through the Office of the Public Protector. More significantly, this important book stands as a record of the crucial work Madonsela has done, always acting without fear or favour. Features Summary Advocate Thuli Madonsela has achieved in her seven years as Public Protector what few accomplish in a lifetime; her legacy and contribution cannot be over-stated... Occasional fox spot. Near-fine condition."Louis Henry Meurant combined enterprise and ability with high ideals, and his activities during his long and varied life illuminate many aspects of the history of South Africa during the nineteenth Century.. In 1828 he moved to Graaff-Reinet, and from there accompanied a party of hunters across the Orange River. On his return he bought the printing press of Godlonton and Stringfellow, which had previously been confiscated by Governor Donkin, and set up a Printing Works in Grahamstown, when only twenty years of age. The border Settlers immediately implored him to bring out a newspaper, and he decided to establish the Graham's Town Journal. Sixty Years Ago gives an interesting account of all that this involved, and includes many light-hearted anecdotes of life on the frontier in those perilous days. The first number appeared on December 30th 1831, and in 1832 Godlonton joined Meurant as partner, and was thus re-united with the printing press that had originally been his." L. H. Meurant: Sixty Years Ago; or, Reminiscences of the Struggle for the Freedom of the Press in South Africa and the Establishment of the First Newspaper in the Eastern Province

Paperback. English. Picador Africa. 2011. 274pp. In good condition. Julius Malema has risen to prominence and power with meteoric speed. From impoverished origins in a Limpopo township, he has, before the age of 30, amassed the political and economic power to command the entire youth wing of the ANC, and to own several substantial luxury homes. The sources of his wealth are befogged by speculation and mystery, but his appeal to the massed ranks of the township and village poor of his country is visible for all to see. And his inflammatory style -- his 'theme song' is 'Shoot the Boer' -- his contrarian tendencies and his showmanship have rapidly brought him to the attention of the world. So troublesome has he become that the old guard of the ANC have gone to great lengths to shackle and reprimand him, and he is now formally in dispute with them. An Inconvenient Youth traces Malema's life, from his early years in Limpopo to his joining the student structures of the ANC in the early 1990s, and his rapid rise through the party's ranks to become the president of the ANC Youth League in 2008. Forde analyses the sources of Malema's wealth, exploring his seamless approach to business and politics. She situates Malema within the ANC's history and shows in unprecedented detail how he has perfected the practices that characterise a new 'struggle' in which individuals extend their personal wealth and political power at the expense of the people. This insightful, meticulously researched account explores how a brave child has grown to become a grave inconvenience, not only to the ANC, but also, due to his style of politics, to South Africa's fledgling democracy.

About the product Edited by L. A. Hewson and F. G. van der Riet. 8vo; original red cloth, lettered in gilt on spine; pictorial dustwrapper; endpaper maps; pp. (iv) + 106, incl. index; 2 plates. Merest trace of foxing to edges. Near-fine condition.'The Rev. John Ayliff, 1820 Settler and one of the pioneer missionaries of the Eastern Cape, left among his papers an unfinished manuscript, here published in full for the first time under the title The Journal of Harry Hastings, Albany Settler. It consists of a narrative mostly in diary form of the experiences of a young British settler of 1820 whom the writer calls"Harry Hastings": the four-month voyage from London to Algoa Bay, the trek to the settlement near Bathurst and the difficult months that followed. Harry Hastings is to be regarded not only as an alter ego of John Ayliff, but also as a typical British settler, a"rooinek"transplanted from Whitechapel to the Zuurveld. The narrative offers a lively and entertaining account of settler life, and a unique fund of information about the first years of the Albany Settlement.'
